Caravan families may lose homes
Posted on August 21st 2009
Caravans provide a low-cost alternative to many people simply unable to get their foot on the housing ladder and in times where farmers have been struggling to make a sustainable living from their land many have diversified to allow caravans on their grounds as a source of extra income.
However one such field owner Les Wells, has recently been served with an notice from the Vale of White Horse District Council to remove some 30 families who currently reside on his site at Greensands Bed and Breakfast in East Hendred.
The notice served in April 2009 instructs Wells to remove all caravans, mobile homes and chalets on the site and return the land to it former agricultural purpose. Yet the residents on the site fear that although they have not been served with an eviction notice that they will not be able to find any other form of housing and be forced onto the streets.
A spokesman from the council explained that Wells did not have planning permission for the alternative use as his appeal has also be overturned and that the council housing department will be on hand to discuss living accommodation with residents on a individual basis.
Yet many residents fear that these provisions may not be enough and families gathered to protest outside the county council building to restate their claims. They argue that the community that has grown up on the site is peaceful, permanent and clean with will tended grounds which have been especially landscaped for their purpose and that they are not travelling vagabonds!
Wells refuses to clear the grounds as he intends to take his case all the way to the High Courts and after shelling out over £50, 000 to have the field installed with running water and electricity for the caravans he is obviously reluctant to undo his construction work.
