Caravan burns down as meal turns bad
Posted on August 29th 2008
Caravan owners are being warned to take heed from the tragic blaze that devoured a caravan in Wales last week.
The caravan's owner, Mr John Purcell had been drinking and was making a meal in the evening last week when the unattended cooking started a blaze which proceeded to burn Mr Purcell's caravan down to the ground.
Mr Purcell himself escaped but suffered burns to his arms, head and hands.
Paul Scott, fire safety enforcement officer for Wrexham, told the Evening Leader: "Mr Purcell was extremely lucky to have escaped with only minor burns - we could easily have been dealing with another fire death here in North Wales.
"Although smoke alarms had activated, the man seemed to be heavily intoxicated and it is thought that he slept through the sound and only awoke in the later stages of the fire.
Although rare, these events should come as a stark reminder to purchase caravan insurance and make sure it is up to date and fully comprehensive before starting any trip.
