Caravan park plans put on hold

Posted on July 11th 2008

Plans to open a new caravan park in Winscales, near Workington, Cumbria, have been put on hold pending a review of the risk of flooding.

Councillors are concerned that the park could heighten the possibility of flooding in the area, and as such are refusing to either approve or reject the proposal until a flood risk assessment has been carried out.

The plans have been put forward by George Campbell, who already has permission to build a 100-bedroom hotel on the site.

However, he has had a change of heart and now wants to build a static caravan park instead of a hotel.

There is some opposition to the creation of a caravan park in the area, but supporters outweigh objectors.

The council has received 13 letters of objection from local residents and a letter expressing the concerns of 14 more, although 41 letters have also been received in favour of the new proposal.

Opponents are worried that a caravan park would increase litter, noise and disturbance, the Times and Star reports.
