Caravanning the 'next cool holiday'
Posted on September 05th 2008
The green interests of the under-30s, who may be most attracted to the idea of caravanning, are often at odds with the view that caravanning is an outdated form of holiday.
A 23 year-old graduate however has designed a new caravan which, it is hoped, will entice the younger generations into taking a caravan holiday.
Named Caravan Pods, the brightly coloured caravans look more like space-age eggs on wheels, but their trendy colours and light interior are bound to attract younger drivers.
The designer David Tonkinson, an industrial design graduate from Poole, Dorset, said: "I believe caravans are in desperate need of modernisation if they are to overcome the stigma surrounding them and are to appeal to more than just retired people.
"I wanted to create a novel, two person caravan that appeals to a fashion conscious user. It also had to be small and lightweight enough to be towed by a small car."
Yet young drivers are also more likely to have an accident while driving, and so caravan insurance must be taken out by any buyer of a caravan before it is taken on the road.
