Carbon monoxide caravan safety campaign for campsites
Posted on January 24th 2012
Most caravan insurance customers are very aware of the everyday threats that face their mobile or static caravans. Fire risks, security problems and general health and safety are uppermost in everyone's minds.
However, a new campaign by the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is now trying to remind campers and caravanners of the dangers of the 'silent killer' carbon monoxide.
In 2011 there were two incidents of serious carbon monoxide poisonings among campers in Cornwall and often people are blissfully unaware of the dangers it may pose, or even if their caravan insurance covers such incidents. As such, a new carbon monoxide register has been created encourage campsites to give visitors to campsites in the region an awareness of how to avoid a potentially fatal gas leak.
The campaign (see link below) encourages owners of camping and caravan sites to learn about the dangers themselves, and give guests information to help them avoid problems too. Once they are registered, sites will be sent packs that contain posters and windows stickers. It is hoped that these, along with flyers to hand out to visitors, will heighten the awareness of carbon monoxide and prevent illness and death.
Carbon monoxide is not called the silent killer for nothing. It' important to check boilers and gas sources against leaks, and it's important to know what danger signs to look out for. You can't rely on caravan insurance for this.
