Century old caravan star of auction
Posted on August 31st 2009
In bright golden yellow with ornate decoration and intricately painted patterns, this Romany gypsy caravan stands out from the rest of the other vehicles available for auction at the East Anglian Motor Auction house in Wymondham, Norwich.
When Tristram Smith, auctioneer decided to branch out from selling the usual family hatchbacks to more classic models he didn't expect to have this gloriously decorated specimen amongst his lots.
There has been much frenzy over this latest caravan to grace the auction scene, as this model is rarely found and the wagon's maker is identifiable by the unique designs emblazoned on the golden backdrop. Smith explained that this caravan is lucky to still be standing after most caravans are burned when their occupier dies in accordance with traditional Romany ceremonies.
In recent times gypsy caravans have been experiencing a modern day renaissance as collectors and homeowners wish to have the decorative vans as artistic garden pieces or to use them as extra house space.
The caravan, built in 1910, needs a little restoration after surviving over a century and has most recently been used as a rather extraordinary swimming pool changing room. Smith expects the caravan to sell for around 3 or 4 grand to a collector who is likely to have the skills to give the vehicle the tender love and care it deserves after a lifetime of service.
Insure My Caravan provides caravan insurance for enthusiastic caravanners across the country providing a detailed service that can tailor-make insurance policies around the amount of usage, model and size of vehicles.
