The North Denes area, in Suffolk, has been promised a makeover by Park Holidays UK after securing a £1.5 million 99-year lease, with another £3 million investment to provide a tented camping area, 150 static caravans and 70 touring pitches.
The former council-run caravan site and an area of the seafront land should attract 15,000 tourists in its first year alone.
Stephen Ardley, the council's portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, told the Lowestoft Journal newspaper: "Park Holidays provided the best offer in terms of value and development of the site and is a very well respected company in the industry.
"Its redevelopment of the site will be comprehensive and work will be undertaken with a strong commitment to making the North Denes a premier park, recognised on a national basis. I have no doubt whatsoever that the future of the North Denes is in safe hands and we now move a step closer to the day when tourists and residents alike return to the area, revitalising north Lowestoft and providing outstanding facilities for us all to be proud of."
A campaign group of local people had objected to the new 'privately owned' management fearing that their access to the seafront would be restricted. Peter Bull, owner of Park Homes, told the local newspaper: "During the development works we will be carrying out extensive landscaping in order to enhance the area and improve access. It is my understanding the public has enjoyed access through to the seawall through various points on the North Denes area. It is our intention to ensure this continues."
