Flooding hits Northumberland caravan parks

Posted on September 09th 2008

The recent flooding in Northumberland has had an adverse impact on three caravan parks in the area, it has been revealed.

The River Wansbeck burst its banks over the weekend following heavy rainfall, displacing 100 people and flooding 1,000 properties in the town of Morpeth in the process.

According to the Association of British Insurers, the devastation - which also affected other parts of the north-east, Herefordshire, Yorkshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire as well as Morpeth - could result in insurance claims in the "low tens of millions".

These claims will be for damage caused to homes and also to caravans given the fact that parks at Budle Bay, Longframlington and Wooler were badly hit.

The events highlight the importance of securing adequate caravan insurance so that damage to a caravan caused by flooding is covered.

Speaking to the BBC, Paul Hedley of Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service expressed his shock at the scale of the damage.

"It was a scene of utter devastation," he said.
