Following the hippy legacy
Posted on August 05th 2009
Germans have long been synonymous with the caravan giving us generations of iconic transport including the Volkswagen (VW) campervan and ever since the country has led the way in caravan consumer choice.
However this year the Caravan Industry Association has reported that there has been a drop in the number of new caravans registered on the road by almost a third between January and March in comparison to last year.
This worrying statistic has the Caravan Salon organisers seriously reconsidering their stance in the market, once the biggest caravan show in Germany held annually in Dasseldorf, the show will now be thinking of ways to compete with the newest caravanning trend.
Following in the footsteps of the MTV show, Pimp My Car, caravan owners are choosing to upgrade their caravans rather than buying brand new expensive mod-con models. However the passion to personalise caravans has always played a big part in caravanning culture as the infamous VW campervan, the choice of vehicle for many hippie's has long been decorated with flowers, peace symbols and rainbows.
The five-figure price tags have been swapped with an industry fixated on the newest cheaper additions to buy for your caravan with Satellite navigation scoring highly on the must-have list and eco-friendly solar panels.
The Caravan Salon has indeed launched its "something old for something new" where it will encourage caravan owners not to shop in their old RVs, trailers and caravans but to "do them up!" They have organised a fully regenerated 1991 model to be on display with advice for willing caravan re-inventors.
Insure My Caravan sources touring caravan insurance and static caravan insurance using compare caravan insurance services to obtain the most competitive premium from market leading providers.
