Posted on February 10th 2010
Somerset and Yorkshire police have successfully completed an operation that involved tracking down and arresting a group of travellers from Swindon. The group where linked to the robberies of almost half the reported caravan theft cases in the UK. In total police seized over £1 million worth of stolen goods, which included £100,000 of jewellery and £70,000 in cash.
Police where shocked to find that after the arrest of this notorious gang the number of caravan thefts reported across the UK fell by almost 50% from 858 to 454. This figure showed the scale at which this gang worked travelling the country and organising different thefts using 'tuggers' to tow the stolen caravans to their desired location.
The mob was finally arrested when 120 police officers raided a camp outside Swindon. Four gang members where arrested Charlie Ward, 27, Martin Ward, 21, John McDonagh, 31, and Martin McDonagh, 29. All four face lengthy jail sentences for the crimes of theft and robbery and conspiracy to steal. Their sentence will be decided at Winchester Crown Court.
