Mondeo Estate 'the best car to tow a caravan'
Posted on June 19th 2008
Practical Caravan, What Car? and the Camping and Caravanning Club have named the Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0 TDCi Titanium auto as Britain's best towcar.
There were five winners in total, with the judges deciding that the cars should be assessed in five different categories according to kerbweight.
The Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi Titanium 5dr won the up to 1,425 kg category; the VW Golf Estate 2.0 TDI SE triumphed in the 1,425-1,574 kg group; the Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0 TDCi Titanium auto was victorious in the 1,574 to 1,724 kg event; the Land Rover Discovery TDV6 HSE auto topped the 1,725-1,900 kg contest and the Jaguar XJ 2.7 TDVi Sport Premium was crowned champion in the over 1,900 kg division.
However, the judges were unanimous in their choice for the overall award.
What Car?'s editor, Steve Fowler, commented: "The standard of towcars tested was higher than ever, yet the overall winner was a clear decision. The Mondeo is not just a great towcar, it's also a great car when there isn't a caravan or a trailer hitched to the back. It's comfortable, spacious, good to drive and affordable."
