Scrap metal thieves target caravans
Posted on January 18th 2012
Although many caravan insurance customers are well aware of basic caravan security, some may be unprepared for thieves looking for scrap metal. As scrap becomes an increasingly lucrative business, some unscrupulous people are looking to make a quick buck by targeting caravans.
Some caravan owners in Nottinghamshire have already been affected by thieves looking to sell caravan batteries for scrap. The Mansfield Chad reported that a total of 18 heavy duty batteries had been from Clipstone last week. Worryingly for those caravan insurance customers trusting in the added security of storage sites in winter, this latest spate of thefts took place at the Homestead Caravan Storage site, where owners had stored their caravans and mobile homes in the hopes of keeping them safe.
The thefts occurred over Friday night and Saturday morning over a week ago and police are looking for a particular car which had been spotted around that time, so hopes for recovery of the stolen batteries haven't yet faded.
Being careful when it comes to your storage options for your caravan in the winter is obviously important. But this theft just goes to show that keeping your caravan insurance fully up-to-date is key to financial peace of mind at a time when scrap metal is highly sought after.
